    The self-practice of sport psychologists : Do they practice what they preach?

    The maturation processes of applied sport psychologists have received little research attention despite trainees and practitioners having often reported experiencing challenging circumstances when working with clients. Within clinical psychology literature the self-practice of cognitive techniques, alongside self-reflection, has been advocated as a means of addressing such circumstances, and as a significant source of experiential learning. The present study sought to identify the possible types of, and purposes for, self-practice amongst twelve UK-based sport psychology practitioners. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews indicated all participants engaged in self-practice for reasons such as managing the self, enhancing understanding of intervention, and legitimising intervention. Some participants also described limitations to self-practice. Subsequently, three overriding themes emerged from analysis: a) the professional practise swamp, b) approaches to, and purposes for, self-practice, and, c) limitations of self-practice.     A Preliminary Investigation into the Use of Humor in Sport Psychology Practice

    ‘Creative efforts’, such as the use of humor,have been found to be beneficial to the nurse-patient, teacher-student , and psychologist-patient alliance. Potentially humoruse might benefit the working alliance in applied sport psychology, yet to datethere is limited research. Sportpsychology consultants (n = 55) completedan online survey that explored humor use within their practice. Statisticalanalyses revealed most participants used humor for adaptive purposes such as tofacilitate the working alliance, reinforce knowledge, and create healthylearning environments. Therefore, possible client change is likely to befacilitated by practitioners’ personal qualities and skills such as humor useand humor style.     PKB/Akt-Dependent Regulation of Cell Motility

    The prosurvival activity of phosphoinositide 3 kinase (PI3K)/Akt (also known as protein kinase B, PKB) pathway has been investigated in great detail in human physiology and disease. Accumulating evidence is emerging that this signaling axis also actively engages with the migratory process in motile cells, including metastatic cancer cells. Interference with the role of PI3K/Akt-mediated cell motility impairs cellular development and attenuates malignant progression of cancer metastasis. Because metastasis is responsible for 90% of mortality in cancer patients, the acceleration of cancer cell spreading observed in association with hyperactivation of the PI3K pathway, triggered for example by chemotherapy/radiotherapy in the clinic, has heightened awareness of the conflict between "good drugs” and unfavorable effects. Here, we discuss recent studies on PI3K/Akt-regulated cell motility in both physiological and pathological settings, with the aim of a better understanding of how activities of the PI3K/Akt axis initiate and transmit "migratory signals” that stimulate cell movement.     Does Study of an Inclusive Education Subject Influence Pre-Service teachers\u27 Concerns and Self-Efficacy about Inclusion?

    Survey data were collected from pre-service teachers studying at a large regional Australian university. These data were examined with the purpose of determining whether pre-service teachers’ views (and concerns) about inclusion and their confidence to teach in inclusive classrooms had changed as a result of studying an inclusive education subject and undertaking a practicum linked to that subject. The results of an analysis based on mean values indicated that the various concerns, namely, resources, acceptance, workplace, and academic standards, did not change markedly as a consequence of the subject and practicum experiences. This analysis also showed a hierarchy of concerns running from resources through to standards. Moreover, the results of a MANCOVA, with self-efficacy serving as the covariate and using the concerns measures as the dependent variables and pre/posttest condition as the independent variable, revealed no significant difference between the various measures on the condition.     This article explores the use of self-disclosure within the sport psychologist-athlete relationship. A summary of prior research relevant to concept definition, contextual factors, and typologies of self-disclosure is provided. The conscious use of self-disclosure as an effective consultancy skill, alongside both the organic and facilitative integration of self-disclosure is discussed. We then position self-disclosure within the dynamics and boundaries of a unique practitioner context, that of the sport psychologist-athlete relationship, using Katz and Hemmings’ (2009) professional relationship framework.     PI3K/AKT, MAPK and AMPK signalling: protein kinases in glucose homeostasis

    New therapeutic approaches to counter the increasing prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus are in high demand. Deregulation of the phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K)/v-akt murine thymoma viral oncogene homologue (AKT), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathways, which are essential for glucose homeostasis, often results in obesity and diabetes. Thus, these pathways should be attractive therapeutic targets. However, with the exception of metformin, which is considered to function mainly by activating AMPK, no treatment for the metabolic syndrome based on targeting protein kinases has yet been developed. By contrast, therapies based on the inhibition of the PI3K/AKT and MAPK pathways are already successful in the treatment of diverse cancer types and inflammatory diseases. This contradiction prompted us to review the signal transduction mechanisms of PI3K/AKT, MAPK and AMPK and their roles in glucose homeostasis, and we also discuss current clinical implication

    PromoterPlot: a graphical display of promoter similarities by pattern recognition

    PromoterPlot (http://promoterplot.fmi.ch) is a web-based tool for simplifying the display and processing of transcription factor searches using either the commercial or free TransFac distributions. The input sequence is a TransFac search (public version) or FASTA/Affymetrix IDs (local install). It uses an intuitive pattern recognition algorithm for finding similarities between groups of promoters by dividing transcription factor predictions into conserved triplet models. To minimize the number of false-positive models, it can optionally exclude factors that are known to be unexpressed or inactive in the cells being studied based on microarray or proteomic expression data. The program will also estimate the likelihood of finding a pattern by chance based on the frequency observed in a control set of mammalian promoters we obtained from Genomatix.     Chronic inflammation is a major cause of human cancer. Clinical cancer therapies against inflammatory risk factors are strategically determined. To rationally guide a novel drug development, an improved mechanistic understanding on the pathological connection between inflammation and carcinogenesis is essential. PI3K-PKB signaling axis has been extensively studied and shown to be one of the key oncogenic drivers in most types of cancer. Pharmacological inhibition of the components along this signaling axis is of great interest for developing novel therapies. Interestingly, emerging studies have shown a close association between PKB activation and inflammatory activity in the vicinity of the tumor, and either blockade of PKB or attenuation of para-tumoral inflammation reveals a mutual-interactive pattern through pathway crosstalk. In this review, we intend to discuss recent advances of PKB-regulated chronic inflammation and its potential impacts on tumor development

    Critical interactions shaping early academic career development in two higher education institutions

    This study was aimed at identifying the critical interactions within work environments that support the development of early career academics as researchers in institutions with lower order research profiles, that is, environments that differ from research-intensive universities. Ten early career academics, five from Australia and five from the UK, were recruited. Multiple sources of data were subjected to a qualitative analysis from which five interrelated themes identified the features of the research journeys: institutional environment, individual attributes, postgraduate and other research training, supportive interactions with others, and outcomes from the research process. A key finding was that individuals differ in their need for redirection, support, challenge, and inspiration which may be important at anytime but especially at turning points in their career. Actions that might be taken by those responsible for implementing plans and programs in professional learning and development for early career academics are outlined. This study offers empirical evidence of the changes that are significant for individual neophyte researchers, and the environments and interactions that influence these changes
